Authorities say a hunting knife and an axe were among the items confiscated from visitors at Cessnock Jail over the weekend.
Corrective services staff conducted searches, resulting in five people being charged and seven being refused entry to the prison.
Also among the haul – cannabis, methamphetamine, drug implements and pocket knives.
Officers were assisted by contraband detection dogs during the operation.
