Two off-duty police officers have apprehended a man in an alleged road rage incident, where he threatened other motorists with a knife.

Police say the incident happened on the Pacific Highway between Woolgoolga and Coffs Harbour, at around 7:30pm on Tuesday night.

After allegedly being witnessed driving erratically, the motorist is accused of getting out of his car at a set of traffic lights and threatening the occupants of another car with a knife.

Police identified themselves and approached the 40-year-old, but he allegedly assaulted one of the officers.

After a brief struggle, he was arrested and charged with menacing driving, wielding a knife and affray.
