ARMIDALE MAYOR REFUSES TO RESIGN AT EXTRAORDINARY MEETING

Tensions ran high in the Armidale Regional Council chambers today, as seven of the city’s 11 councillors pushed for mayor Simon Murray to resign.

The vote of no confidence coming from councillors citing a lack of communication from Councillor Murray.

The divided council held an extraordinary meeting this morning, to say their piece.

“The last two years has seen an increasing number of councillors meeting with Councillor Murray, imploring him to listen to them about SO many concerns around his leadership.”

“I firmly believe that there is no room for politics in local government. I fully understand that, as councillors, we’re not going to agree on many issues or, in fact, get on at all. But, to say that I am appalled, saddened and disappointed at the political agenda behind the motion today, is a huge understatement.”

The motion passed, but Councillor Murray isn’t legally required to resign and is choosing to remain as mayor.
