RESIDENTS OUTRAGED OVER NIMBIN TOWER

Nimbin residents are fuming over a 30-metre tall communications tower built just 10 metres from houses.
They say the steel structure looks like something from outer space, and is an eye-sore in a small country town.

It’s been certainly coming for a long time. Nimbin needs this, but I believe it could be more appropiately located.
Why arn’t the people resposable asking the community? This is the only way such an issue can be resolved.
Ask the locals! Start with the traditional land owners.
Nimbin will not tollerate this to happen any other way.

Nimbin Communications Tower
Nimbin’s heritage values may be compromised due to the recent installation of a 36m communications tower at the Nimbin Police Station. We understand NSW government construction of new works may be exempted from community consultation processes and development applications however, it is abhorrent that Lismore City Council did not inform the local community of plans which they have been aware of since February 2009. The installation of this steel framed tower in a heritage listed village disregards the community’s affinity with the cultural landscape. Council’s own heritage conservation paper recognises Nimbin’s high degree of integrity and abundant surviving evidence which demonstrate the process of village development.
The structure affects the tourism potential inherent in what is designated a ‘heritage village’, the heritage listed views to Nimbin Rocks, the character of the streetscape set against the rural landscape – irrespective of the potential health risks. Most significantly, Nimbin Rocks is one of the most sacred Aboriginal sites on the Northern Rivers.
According to NSW Police, the tower will improve communications as the radio reception in this region is poor.

It is crazy that this tower was erected without the need for an environmental impact study, or development application.
I am surprised that they were not told to “double up” on an existing tower at Mt Nardi. After all, I remember the long list of reasons given to 2NimFm Nimbin’s community radio station, when they tried to put their antennea up higher.
I guess the police exempt themselves from any normal reasonable behaviour, by the fact that they are police. It seems unreasonable that they become the rule breakers in our society.
It is outrages that a great deal of taxpayers many has been wasted in erecting a Police Telecommunication Tower right in the hart of Nimbin Village whiles the imposing and not far away Mt Nardi Telecommunication tower could have been used to fulfill the Police needs.
This is the classic burocratic blunder executed by some paper shuffler far away and not in touch with the residents and reality of things.
If the Police are demanding respect so as well they should give back respect to the resident wishes by removing the 36m tall atrocity from the landscape. Does the Police care about their own public image?
The tower is a total eyesore! There is no regard for the heritage listing of the village. As has been stated above why not upgrade the existing tower? why deface our village? why does such construction not warrant public input? why are they exempt? This is Not a democracy when such abuse of the inhabitants (those who provide the funds) and the lifestyle we hold dear, is not considered in any way. If anyone had consider the community then they would know that the community would find this tower offensive.
I could not believe what I saw when going into town the other night
This 36metre tall ugly tower in the middle of our beautiful village
Many tourist come to Nimbin to enjoy the old world charm and painted buildings
as well as the stunning natural landscapes
The awful Tower now obstructs certain views of the Rocks a beautiful natural wonder of the area
I understand the need for police to have clear communications with each other
But it is equally important for them to have clear communications with the broader community
It won’t come much clearer than this Please relocate the awful tower to a more appropriate place.
I’ve recently walked down to the Police station and there is direct line of sight to the existing (massive) Communications Tower on Mt. Nardi. The impact this will have on a town that relies on tourism cannot be understated. If they really wanted to improve radio communication in the area why didn’t they build this on existing Crown Land up on High St. That is a lot higher ground and would have added more than 50 metres to the height of the tower vastly improving the radio footprint …
(I love that Nimbin has a High St.)
Community consultation is important
Settle down on the High Street suggestion Max…are you trying to freak us out up here? This monstrosity would be a blight on this beautiful valley no matter where it was built. Surely the already vandalised Mt. Nardi could have served their purpose more than adequately.
It is just another example of the totalitarian attitude of the NSW government and their insensitive attitude to local communities. For other communities it might be an unwanted coal mine or road rally. Whatever happenned to respect for people, their health and lifestyle or acknowledgement of the real health risks of high radiation communication towers. Even if the police want to be irradiated there are residential houses right next door.
In the beginning we collectively established the Institutions, which comprise the social order to enact our decisions. There was a time when the Institutions comprising the Social Order seriously took the wishes and views of the individual into consideration. But at this stage the Social Order has acquired a life of its own and it actually perpetuates itself at the expense of the individual. Aesthetics has no meaning to the system, and it does not care about the rights and beliefs of the Indigenous Population, the heritage conservation paper and the potential detriment to the areas tourism potential. The Social Order does not provide us with direction or purpose. It does not care about, or take into account the individual’s wants, needs or desires. The Nimbin Tower is a classic case in point. The Individual, through the Council, was not consulted, and, in fact, it was run roughshod over. As far as the Council is concerned, the project is still on hold pending the provision of further information by the NSW Police when the Tower was erected. Even if they were consulted, the NSW government construction of new works may be exempted from community consultation processes and the likelihood is that any objection by the Council would have been ignored. At best the Community and Individual have been presented with a “Fait Accompli”. In reality we now have no more real input into the decision making process than the average Chinese citizen, which is to say none at all.
“According to NSW Police, the tower will improve communications as the radio reception in this region is poor”
Dahhhh.
According to the community (of whom should be held with the highest respects), this tower has been inappropiately placed without community consultation.
Who is responsable? Certainly not the police?
To me the most worrying aspect is the extra radiation when sensitive people already find the current levels of exposure from electrosmog palpable and debilitating. The levels have increased markedly in the last few years and one of the attractions of the area for many is the serenity of the natural world around us and relative lack of such interferance. Other countries have set aside areas for people sensitive to electrosmog to live, lets wake up to the pandemic that is already upon us; if oyu doubt search out Cindy Sage and the Biosafety Report for the latest and very disturbing findings on the effects of 50Hz, wi-fi, mobile phones and such radiative technologies on living systems. Every subsection of the extensive report recommends at least a 1000-fold decrease in the current `safe’ exposure levels as significant biological effects can be shown at this level of power and the young are much more sensitive still. These studies did not include the cumulative effects of many other sources such as this tower and its military cousins let alone household appliances, hot-spots, etc. and no long term studies have been done. If we can save the scenery as well then great. If you have been cooked a bit in town recently tree hugging is of great benefit.
