Local politicians and members of the wider community have gathered at Civic Park, to celebrate a milestone in Newcastle – and the nation’s – history.
Today’s flag-raising ceremony marked the 40th anniversary of the aboriginal flag being raised above City Hall for the first time.
Then Lord Mayor Joy Cummings made headlines in 1977, by becoming the first leader to fly the flag over a city or town hall in Australia.
