BICENTENARY PREPARATIONS BEGIN

Tamworth is fast approaching a milestone birthday.

Next year the town will celebrate it’s bi-centenary.

“John Oxley was the first European to come through the valley. The Gomeroi had been in the valley and beyond for thousands of years. But for the first European to come through, next year will be 200 years,” Mike Cashman, Bicentenary Co-ordinator.

Today, volunteers from the Tamworth Historical Society were painting the Oxley Anchor, which was unveiled at centenary celebrations in 1918…

They’re calling on community groups to get involved in next year’s celebrations.

“We’re putting out a calendar, a bi-centenary calendar in November of this year and the whole idea with that is for various groups to put down an activity and a date to be part of that calendar.”
