A grass fire near Fort Scratchley has sent smoke billowing through the Newcastle CBD today.
Shortly before 1:45pm, fire crews responded to reports of a grass fire on Shortland Esplanade near Fort Drive.
Four fire crews were able to contain the blaze, which burnt an area estimated to be 200 metres by 50 metres.
Fort Drive was closed at the northern end.
