CONCERNS TURTLE DEATHS LINKED TO SHARK NETS

Australian Seabird Rescue is concerned about a possible link between dead loggerhead turtles on Ballina beaches and the recent installation of shark nets.
The loggerheads were found within two days of each other, on Ballina beaches.
Both were suffering fluid retention and were bleeding from the nose, which experts say indicate a drowning.
“We’re not 100 per cent that those turtles were caught in the nets but if you look at the by-catch report there are quite a few numbers of loggerhead turtles that were captured in the nets and released alive”
Seabird Rescue said it would continue to work in partnership with DPI.
Anyone who sees a sea turtle on the beach is urged to contact the organisation.
