A man has been charged with attempted murder, after allegedly attacking two people with a machete, east of Lismore.

A 51-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman were at their home in Goonellabah on Sunday night, when their electricity was turned off.

The pair walked outside, when they were allegedly attacked.

The man suffered deep cuts to his face and head, while the woman was struck on her left arm.

Police believe the attacker is known to the couple.

On Monday morning, a 46-year-old man was taken to hospital after being found with self-inflicted wounds at a cemetery north of Port Macquarie.

He was later charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of malicious wounding with intent.
