The state opposition is calling on the Baird Government to fast track a container deposit scheme, claiming the Hunter River’s ecosystem is choking with rubbish.
The government is currently taking submissions on the recycling project, which isn’t slated to begin until 2017.
“Bring on container deposit legislation as soon as possible we will support you and make sure you get the model right so we can get rid of cans and bottles out of our waterways forever”, says Shadow Minister for the Environment, Penny Sharpe.
Labor is also calling for bi-partisan support regarding a bill to ban single use plastic bags.
