But for the truckies at today’s Transport Awareness Day, times are changing and for the better.
The annual event on Newcastle’s foreshore was about highlighting their campaign for better working hours and conditions.
But it was also aimed at drawing attention to the size of some rigs and the dangers facing drivers.
“They are a big piece of machinery. You know they’re 50-tonne. So you’ve got to be careful.”
“There are a lot of cowboys out there but there are also a lot of good operators out there too you know”
