RATE RISE ON THE CARDS FOR NEWCASTLE

Newcastle Council has voted in favour of starting a process to sell off three of its retirement villages.

They include Allambie and Carinya court at New Lambton as well as Kiah Court at Jesmond.

They’ll be sold to a private operator, to reduce council’s asset maintenance backlog.

It also decided last night to apply for a special rate variation above the 2.3 per cent cap, imposed by Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.

But council hasn’t confirmed just how much higher it will be.
