Whitehaven Coal’s Maules Creek Mine officially opened today, after it was completed three months ahead of schedule.
The multi-million dollar mine near Boggabri is expected to inject $68 million into the local economy, while creating 500 jobs.
The project has had a controversial history, having been the centre of heated protests over the last three years, resulting in numerous arrests.
