From today, the New England region is in its bushfire danger period.
Anyone wishing to light a fire in Armidale, Guyra, Glen Innes, Uralla and Walcha will require a permit.
The Rural Fire Service also urges residents to start preparing for fire season now, including removing flammable materials from yards, clearing gutters and checking hoses.
On days of high fire danger or above, permits will be automatically suspended.
