MARINERS BREAK 8 YEAR DROUGHT WITH GRAND FINAL VICTORY

There’s no time to celebrate for the Central Coast Mariners, who are now on the way to South Korea, less than 24 hours after claiming victory in the A-League Grand Final.

The Mariners defeated Western Sydney 2-nil, breaking an 8 year Grand Final drought.

General Manager of Football Lawrie McKinna says the club have now shed the ‘chockers’ label.

“Sense of relief, you know, we’ve been going eight years and been in four grand finals. Now the ‘chokers’ tag is gone. We won one and we thoroughly deserve to win one.”

“It’s fantastic for the coast, they’re a great advert for the Central Coast. We’re a success story. We can compete against Sydney and Melbourne, the biggest cities in the country.” Mckinna said.

McKinna is also hopeful the win will secure more financial backing for the club.

“Hopefully it will get local government, state government, federal government behind the club because the club’s got a place in Australian sport. The club’s got a huge place on the Central Coast. We just need to make sure the club is here for the long term.”
