Police are investigating the cause of a fire, which badly damaged a unit in Wallsend early this morning.
A woman woke to the sound of the fire alarm in her Harriett Street unit just before 1 o’clock, and found the fire burning in her 7-year-old son’s bedroom.
Both managed to escape uninjured.
Fire fighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading into two other units.
