NEWS UPDATE: OCTOBER 6, 2016

Here’s Tyson Cottrill with an NBN News update.

  • An alleged drunk driver has been released on bail – charged following a crash in Sydney, which injured a six-year-old girl. The 50-year-old is accused of being more than six times over the limit when she allegedly struck the young girl.
  • The men dubbed the the Budgie Nine are due to face court in Kuala Lumpur today. There’s still no official word on whether they will face charges – for stripping down to their Malaysian flag-themed swimmers – in post Formula One race celebrations.
  • Fire has burnt through around 16-hectares of bushland at the end of the M1 at Beresfield near Newcastle overnight. It took fire crews several hours to bring the blaze under control.
  • Residents in Florida could be facing the biggest evacuation in its history as Hurricane Matthew heads towards the country’s east coast.
  • Disappointment for Australia in the cricket, with South Africa winning the third one-day test by four wickets to wrap up their five game series.
  • And a playful pod of whales has put on a show off Sydney this morning – the giant creatures frolicking in the warm waters – definitely in no hurry to return south to chilly Antarctica.

All those stories and more in NBN News tonight at six.
