FIRST SHARK ATTACK IN BYRON FOR 21 YEARS

Yesterday’s tragic death at Clarke’s beach is the first fatal shark attack in Byron Bay for 21 years.

The last was in 1993, when 31-year-old John Ford was taken by a great white shark, while scuba diving off Julian Rocks.

He and his wife, Deborah, were honeymooning from Sydney at the time.

She reported seeing a 4 to 5 metre shark 3 metres below the surface before her husband failed to surface.

A local fisherman later caught the white pointer, and police recovered the victim’s remains.
