COUNCIL FINED FOR CREEK CONTAMINATION

Taree Council has been fined more than $94,000 for an incident which saw contaminated waste flow into a local creek.

In April 2012, a pipe carrying leachate from the Bucketts Way Landfill failed, causing the material to escape through bushland and into a tributary of Dennes Creek.

The leachate turned the water black, but the contamination was prevented from spreading into the Manning River.

The penalty imposed by the Environmental Protection Authority will fund bushland regeneration works and legal costs.
