FERAL PIGS IN THE FIRING LINE

The Department of Primary Industries is instructing landholders to make the most of hot weather conditions in the new year, as the battle to control feral pig numbers continues.
DPI invasive species officer Troy Crittle says soaring temperatures force pigs to seek out shade and water, making for easier targets.
He says January and February are ideal months to take action, with grain harvesting complete and sorghum crops just starting out.
Last year, feral pigs caused serious damage to crops across the region, with some farmers losing as much as a third of their harvest to the pests.
The Liverpool Plains Feral Pig Taskforce is encouraging those affected to take control by baiting, trapping and shooting the animals.
