A critical incident investigation is underway, following a car crash at Purfleet yesterday morning.
Officers were patrolling the Bucketts Way at around 2am, when the ute allegedly passed them at high speed.
They attempted to stop the vehicle, but it sped away.
Police say they terminated the pursuit, and a short time later the ute lost control and crashed into a large road sign.
A number of people ran from the scene, but a 13-year-old boy was taken to John Hunter Hospital with serious back injuries.
The investigation will be overseen by the Professional Standards Command.
