A 29-year-old has been charged, after a serious assault in a Newcastle suburb overnight.
Shortly before 4am, emergency services responded to reports of an assault on Mitchell Street in Merewether.
Paramedics treated a 28-year-old man at the scene before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
Subsequent inquiries led police to arrest a 29-year-old man at John Hunter Hospital.
He was charged with assaulting causing grievous bodily harm, and will appear before Newcastle Local Court later today.
