With a powerful east coast swell expected to hit this weekend, Newcastle Council lifeguards are urging people to act responsibly.
Local beaches and the Newcastle Ocean Baths are expected to be hammered by waves up to six metres high.
Those who brave the swell are being urged to swim or surf at patrolled beaches only, and obey safety signs.
