FREE RANGE EGGS DEFINED

A national definition for free range eggs has been officially adopted by Consumer Affairs Ministers from across Australia following months of heated debate.

Under the new agreement, free range eggs must come from hens that have ‘meaningful’ and ‘regular’ access to an outdoor range, with no more than 10,000 hens per hectare.

Producers will also have to display outdoor stocking densities on packaging.

Advocate group Choice is outraged and says it should be no more than 1,500 hens per hectare.

It’s calling on consumers to boycott 19 egg brands.
