Fire crews have contained a grass fire threatening homes at Merrimac.
They started back-burning east of the M1, fearing forecast wind changes could cause the fire to flare up.
Parents weren’t taking any chances.
“I guess with all the fires a few years ago coming what if the wind comes up, I’m sure they are safe at school but mine are staying home today.”
A short time ago, small patches were still smouldering.
