Families at Main Beach on the Gold Coast today were confronted by the distressing sight of an ill-fated, critically-endangered leatherback turtle.
The 400 kilo plus turtle had been dragged out to sea yesterday, after it was caught in a shark net.
“It looks like a big shark tried to take a bite out of it or bitten it in half sadly”
“It’s very rare to see a leatherback today and so just to see this animal dead like this it’s quite a tragedy”
The leatherback turtle population has been in dramatic decline since the 1980s.
