MARCHESI TAKES OUT WILSON ARTS AWARD

Brisbane based artist, Karla Marchesi has won the inaugural Wilson Visual Arts Award with her confronting painting, “more than ever”.

The piece beat 82 entries to take out the $10,000 prize in Lismore.

“It’s about clutter, her parents were actually hoarders so she’s kind of dealing with that and it also talks about our culture of consumerism.”

The winner was decided last night by the curator of Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art, Peter Mackay.

“I think he was pretty convinced about the winner, so a lot of the people were quite surprised because when you first see the painting it’s quite confronting.”

Byron Bay artist, James Guppy was highly commended with one entry, alongside Annie Wang’s photo, ‘Butchery’ and Svetlana Bailey’s print, 12.”
