UNION TAKES ACTION AGAINST TELSTRA

The Community and Public Sector Union is taking action against Telstra, following Tuesday’s announcement that 116 jobs could be axed from the Goonellabah call centre.

After meeting with the affected workers yesterday, it has begun circulating petitions, calling on the telecommunications giant to keep the centre open.

“We have to move quickly on this. we’ve only got a consultation period of three weeks before Telstra makes its final decision.”

Telstra has told staff they can either take a redundancy package or apply for jobs elsewhere in the network.

“A number of staff have said, this is Lismore, this is where we want to be, this is a lifestyle choice for us and we have strong ties to the community.”

A copy of the petition can be accessed at the office of Member for Page, Janelle Saffin.
