The Hunter has recorded its first confirmed case of meningococcal disease for 2013.
The young boy is in a stable condition and close contacts to the child have been prescribed clearance antibiotics.
Last year the Hunter New England Health District had nine confirmed cases of the disease, down from 15 cases in 2011.
