CANCER UNIT TURNS 25

The Calvary Mater Hospital cancer treatment unit will mark a milestone on Saturday, by opening its doors to the public.

The Radiation Oncology Department was created 25 years ago with money raised by an NBN Telethon.

It’s now the biggest facility of its kind in the state.

“Well the department’s gone from one machine to treat patients to five linear accelerators to treat patients over that time. We’ve gone from a staff of 7 people to over 90 people.”

Staff will give guided tours, and demonstrations of treatment machines, to highlight the latest technology being employed in the fight against cancer.
