PRISON OFFICERS PROTEST

Prison officers at Grafton who are facing the sack are refusing to transfer prisoners to other gaols across the state.

Last week the O’Farrell government announced that it was scaling down the facility and 92 prison officers and 15 nurses would lose their jobs or be moved to other locations.

The gaol, which has operated since 1893, currently employs 120 staff and houses up to 275 inmates.

The government says 30 jobs will remain at Grafton Gaol, which will be used to hold up to 60 remand prisoners.

There’s been angry backlash over the decision, and tomorrow there will be a mass demonstration in the city at midday.
