RESIDENTS FEAR DIESEL AND AMMONIUM NITRATE COULD CREATE LETHAL COCKTAIL

A biodiesel plant under construction on the former BHP site at Mayfield North has local residents uneasy.
Following last week’s fertiliser plant explosion in Texas, more questions are being asked about the proximity of volatile liquids and chemicals to homes. (Video below)

The construction of the Stolthaven Australia Pty Ltd fuel storage facility of the Mayfield site within the Port of Newcastle was approved by the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure in June 2012.
Via the department, the facility has undergone a stringent assessment process which identified potential risks.
Safety measures will include…
– An emergency response plan for the storage of fuels, transport and the operation of the terminal.
– A fire management system
– A regular maintenance program.
The facility will be built and operated in accordance with Australian and international safety requirements.
