BYRON’S KOALAS RECEIVE MULTI MILLION DOLLAR BOOST

Byron Bay’s dwindling Koala population will benefit from a $2-million federal government grant aimed at improving habitats and population growth.
A study into Koala population in the shire estimated there are only 240 koalas left in the area.
The funding will be shared between Tweed and Byron Councils and used for bushfire management, to plant food trees and vegetation and to create 100 hectares of new wildlife corridors across the two shires.
“This is a 5 year project so it’s a significant boost to the conservation of not only the koalas but all the flora and fauna in the area.”
The funds will also be spent regenerating 225 hectares of existing habitat.
