BYRON RESIDENTS TO COP A RATES RISE

Residents in the Byron Shire can expect an overall rates increase of 6.1 per cent in the next financial year.

It’s predicted the increase will bring council into a $40,000 budget surplus.

The rise works out to be about $4 a week for ratepayers.

“They go to infrastructure and some maintenance infrastructure, there is about 4 million worth of expenditure on roads this year, not enough, we require about 9 million a year to keep our roads to the level everyone is accustomed to.”

It’ll be the third consecutive year that council’s has raised its general rates as part of the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal rate pegging.
