Thousands of people in the Bellingen Shire have been overcharged due to a miscalculation on their rates.
The mistake was picked up two months ago but only made public today because the council was waiting on legal advice.
Some ratepayers have been overcharged by as much as $200.
The council has apologised for the error and is taking steps to ensure it can’t happen again.
People who have paid their rates in full will receive a cheque in the mail for the overcharged amount.
Those who pay by installments will have their next payment adjusted.
