POLICE WARN ABOUT PHONE SCAM

Police have issued a warning about scammers, who have been calling Hunter residents and claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office.

The scammers have been providing fake case file numbers and threatening people with gaol if they don’t pay money.

Police say the ATO never calls members of the public demanding money, and people should never pay or provide their personal details.

Anyone who receives a call should contact Scamwatch on 1300 795 995.

  1. I got a call supposedly from the Melbourne office of the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions rather than the ATO. It was in the same vein however, some gibberish about “a pension claim” and “fraudulent lodgement” and a threat of gaol.

  2. This ATO scam case is just like IRS in the US. I have been reading reports and news about tit since years ago at blogs, social media, and some consumer sites like http://callercenter.com. I think this phone scam has been an international most dangerous problem for now, since it happens worldwide, and the target are varies. I don’t know how, but I really hope that police department or any other authorities will take some serious action regarding these scammers. There have been so many people falling victim to them, and so much money have been lost.
