The “axe or save” saga of Newcastle’s Laman Street figs is back in limbo, with the council voting for an independent risk assessment.
The decision process is now more than two years and almost a million dollars in the making, and patience among some observers is fast running out.
What great news that Cr Connell wants to have an inquiry into this process, so that we can all learn from it. Cr Luke’s call for an administrator is simply bizarre. A more effective way to make his point could be to resign in protest.

What a figgin’ joke!
The community knows what we have~ a natural stand of paradise in the centre of a concrete city & we DON’T want them gone to put up a parking lot! Laman Street is no place for a tree museum, leave them alone for the birds (the microbats) & the bees.
This has never just been about 14 beloved anzac memorial trees in our civic precinct. It has & is about a bigger context called ”proper process’. Imagine if any other of the areas constituents( or developers for that matter), would dare try to use fictitious risk factors & a road act, to justify a major redevelopment and therby bypass all other regulations, process & policy? Yet in my opinion this is exactly what Council Officers with support of the likes of Cr Cook, Buman, Luke & Sharpe have undertaken. Shameful costly conduct for such a valued cultural hub and place of significance to so many generations of novacastrians & tourist alike. It is incredible to think NCC could also get away with potentially destroying threatened species rare urban habitat. Imagine if a ratepayer tried to do that!

This is great news. These trees are not only valuable to locals and visitors (our important tourism industry), but also to wildlife like micro bats and many different bird species. They provide shade, fresh air and a very nice energy for people. There are already far too few trees in Newcastle.
Leaving the trees there, if they are found after all to be as harmless as, well, trees, is by far our best and cheapest option. If they are found to be potentially dangerous than I imagine so could about half the other trees anywhere.
Who, or what, ever started this anyway? Did the trees ever drop a branch on anyone? No. But, as the council told a friend of mine, “they might.”
INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT should have been done as soon as the huge recorded & documented Public Interest demanded it.

is it true that in the Land & Enviro Court last year an assurance was given by NCC Senior Counsel that there would be no impact on Civic Park in the removal of these majestic trees, including no chasing of tree roots into Civic Park if the trees were removed? All this debate and half the trees have to stay in the ground anyway?
wow! can we just get over it, cut them down and let council get back to the important things like running this town?
