MEETING SCHEDULED TO SAVE THE PIPIS

A community meeting will be held in Ballina this Thursday night to address the dwindling number of Pipi’s on New South Wales beaches.
Pipi’s are a vital part of the ecosystem and provide food to some of the North Coast’s endangered shore bird population.
But it’s thought extensive harvesting and disease are contributing to their decline.
New South Wales Fisheries are looking at adopting some South Australian techniques to save the species.
“They’ve got an open season, they close the season for a certain time of the year, they have a bag limit and a size limit.”
The meeting will will be held 7 o’clock this thursday night at the Slipway hotel in Ballina.
