PROTESTOR PUTS WORDS INTO ACTION

Serial pest Peter Hoare has expressed his anger over the controversial Laman Street fencing.

Mr. Hoare pushed down parts of the structure this morning, during a shoot by an NBN news crew.

It’s been six months since the fencing was put up Newcastle council decided to keep the iconic figs.

Greens councillor Michael Osborn will propose a solution to the Laman Street working party this Thursday – one he hopes will reach a compromise between the risk and safety issues and also the health of the figs.

His low-cost plan will see the introduction of two large garden beds on the North side of the road (closest to Civic Park) and also gates at the Darby Street and Dawson Street entrances.

It’s hoped the gardens will maintain the health of the trees – while the gates will be used to restrict access to the street during strong weather conditions.

We’ll bring you the full story at 6pm.
