The Nurses Association has voted to start closing beds in Maitland Hospital from Wednesday as part of industrial action to secure a ration of one nurse to every four patients.
Meanwhile nurses started closing non-emergency beds at John Hunter Hospital this morning.
A hospital spokesperson says staff are working to minimise any impact and emergency patients will still be seen.
