A car fire is believed to have sparked a large blaze in bushland near Beresfield overnight.
14 Fire and Rescue NSW and RFS crews worked into the night to extinguish the fire, which started at around 5pm near the end of the M1.
They eventually gained the upper hand around midnight, with backburns stopping its spread.
Their job made even more challenging due to the windy conditions.
Thick smoke in the area also caused the southbound lanes of John Renshaw Drive to close for several hours.
