The dangers of surfing were brought home in a painful way for a Coffs Harbour man this morning.
The 53-year-old broke his lower leg as he attempted to surf a wave at Macauleys headland around 9:30.
A fellow surfer helped him onto the beach, while a passing walker called an ambulance.
Jenny Grant thought the injured surfer was stretching before noticing he was bleeding.
He was taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital.
