A man has been airlifted to Tamworth Hospital with head and chest injuries, following a car crash near Inverell overnight.

Police say the car was travelling west along the Gwydir Highway at Elsmore, when it struck a kangaroo and rolled down an embankment, around 7pm.

A 41-year-old rear-seat passenger was trapped for some time, before being taken to Inverell hospital – he was later airlifted.
