100 jobs are on the chopping block, with Centennial Coal’s Newstan underground colliery at Fassifern to close at the end of the month.
The mine will be placed into maintenance mode, with the company citing the strong Australian dollar and low price of coal the reason for its closure.
45 of Newstan’s 148 mine workers will move to the company’s Myuna colliery, while seven will continue to maintain the Fassifern site.
Newstan is the fourth mine to close in the Hunter this year.
