FERAL PIG DISEASE WARNING

The North West Livestock Health and Pest Authority has urged residents to take caution when dealing with feral pigs.
The warning comes after a number of hunting dogs and an owner were diagnosed with swine brucellosis.
The disease is transmitted from pigs, and can cause fever, sweating and loss of appetite – as well as headaches and back pain.
Anyone who comes into contact with a feral pig should thoroughly wash their hands and arms in soapy water.
Owners are also warned to keep hunting dogs away from family members, particularly pregnant women, as the disease can cause them to miscarry.
Those who suspect they may be infected should contact a vet or New South Wales DPI officer immediately.
