TIME’S RUNNING OUT IN BACKPACKER TAX SAGA

The clock is ticking for the Coallition Government to get the revised backpacker tax over the line.
With only two sittings left for the year, Member for New England Barnaby Joyce is concerned the legislation will be blocked by Labor, leaving farmers across the electorate in limbo.
“We only have two weeks of parliament left otherwise the rate goes back to 32.5 cents. So, we’ve worked hard to come up with a reasonable solution that is fair to the Australian workers in the fields or in the shed and attracts the foreign workers in that we need.”
The current proposal is to drop the tax rate to 19 and a half per cent to encourage foreign workers to Australia.
