It’s not a sport that grabs the headlines too often, but there was certainly no lack of enthusiasm when the Australian Gateball Championships rolled into Newcastle over the weekend.
Described as the one-day cricket form of croquet, it gives even the youngest competitors a chance to mix it with the best.
The event attracted teams from across Asia, the UK and even Brazil, and it was the Chinese who dominated the competition.
