WOMAN SHOT IN JAW 2:30PM

A preliminary investigation has found a police constable with less than five years experience shot a woman in the jaw while trying to arrest her in Coffs Harbour.

Police stopped the woman’s black Kia Sorento 4WD with no number plates around 12.40 this morning, after discovering it had been stolen.

A scuffle reportedly broke out before the shot was fired, but it’s unclear at this stage, whether the 24-year-old woman from Victoria was armed.

Both police officers involved are distressed by the shooting and have been sent home, as investigations continue.

The injured woman remains in a stable condition in Coffs Harbour Hospital and will be airlifted to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital if her health deteriorates .
