RESIDENTS ASKED TO HELP WITH RESEARCH INTO PORT STEPHENS BUSHFIRES
Residents in Port Stephens are being asked to help with a major research program, looking into the recent bushfires in the area – in a bid to limit the damage if it happened again.
Salt Ash and Medowie were both affected by destructive bushfires in October – with four homes destroyed at Salt Ash, and hundreds evacuated as fire tore through 5000 hectares of land near Heatherbrae.
Six weeks on, the RFS is working with several organisations researching people’s preparation, decision making and actions, specifically in Salt Ash.
“This research is part of the continuing relationship between the NSW RFS and the national CRC research program, which helps all agencies better understand people’s actions and ensure lessons are learned,” said NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons.
Interviews with affected residents will begin next week, and an online survey will also be available.
Affected residents can register their interest in taking part in the research by emailing info@bushfirecrc.com or calling 0419 550 409.
