A rescission motion to stop plans to change the name of Greater Taree City Council has been passed six votes to three.
The decision means a survey to gauge public opinion on the move will no longer go ahead.
The Manning Valley Business Chamber has been pushing for the change, and will now decide if it will continue to pursue the matter.
